Summit To Gain For Kathryn And Essential Needs

An intrepid Harrogate woman is once again set to scale the heights with her latest fundraising venture on behalf of furniture re-use charity Essential Needs.

Kathryn Haw will be attempting to reach Everest Base Camp in mid April with the hope of raising around £500 for the Harrogate-based charity that recycles furniture, household and electrical items, to people on low incomes or in receipt of income based benefit.

Kathryn has already reached the summit of Kilimanjaro and cycled across the UK raising over £4000 so far for Essential Needs and she’s looking forward to her latest challenge: “This has been a year in the planning and will involve an eight day trek to the famous Everest Base Camp.

“The trek should allow for acclimatisation and once there we will also walk to a point called Kala Patar where we will be able to get a clear view of the summit, weather permitting!

“Fundraising in the current climate is proving very hard but the money raised for Essential Needs should help the charity continue their good work on behalf of local people on low incomes or benefits,” added Kathryn.

Essential Needs chief Martin Brassington commented: “Kath’s efforts have been a massive help at a time when fundraising has become far more challenging and we wish her the very best of luck in this latest bold venture.”

In 2010 Essential Needs diverted almost 60,000 Kgs of furniture and white goods from landfill involving 1186 collections and 1106 deliveries. They currently help almost 3,500 in the Harrogate area and are always on the look out for volunteers to assist in their efforts.
