It’s with a heavy heart that we leave Skiathos and head for the urban hustle and bustle of Athens in time for the opening ceremony of the 2011 Special Olympics World Games.

This Aegean island paradise has been home for the past five days and what a home!  The warmth of the sun has only been matched by the glowing welcome we’ve received everywhere we have been.

The Special Olympics World Summer Games cranks into life this Saturday with thousands of athletes with learning difficulties from every corner of the planet competing for glory in the home of the modern Olympic movement.

Of the 22 sports that make up the Athens Special Olympics none would take place without the monumental efforts of thousands of volunteers drafted in from every part of Greece.

In three days time the biggest global sporting event of 2011 will come alive in a nation that sowed the seeds of competitive sport. Over 60,000 people are expected to attend the opening ceremony of a ten day sporting extravaganza that will feature over 7,000 athletes from virtually every nation on earth.
